Arbors and pergolas add structure to a garden as well as providing a shady respite. Garden arbors are free-standing structures that can be made of a variety of woods (in the Southeast we tend to use either pressure treated pine or the more expensive but longer lasting cedar), composite materials, fiberglass, and/or plastics. Arbor designs can also be built using a mixture of materials.
Outdoor pergolas are essentially the same as garden arbors, except that they are attached to an existing structure, such as a house, at at least one location.
